So, went to work today and swiped my card through to raise the entrance barrier, just another day. Something peculiar was behind me though this time. I noticed a car almost kissing my rear bumper while I was entering, and quickly realised this was someone trying to enter the private parking to find a spot.
By the time I realised this, the barrier had come down on his car, bent and slightly dented the top of his car. So naturally, I parked, got my stuff out walked towards the entrance and asked a simple question
Me: “Um.. Do you work here?”
Him: “Even if I didnt, its none of your business”
Me: “Mate, you just broke the barrier and dented your car, hardly a ‘legit’ entrance”
Him: “Do you know who I am before you start questioning me like this?” (turns and starts to walk)
Me: “Doesnt really matter who you are, thats totally irrelevant. You broke the barrier of an employee only parking zone”
Him: “Call the engineer to fix it, im in a hurry” (Again, turns back and starts to walk)
Me: “Its rude to walk away when someone is talking to you by the way”
Him: “See you later” (walks)
So we are both walking in the same direction, and I threw a couple of non-offensive rants at him, questioning his manners basically. Until he finally said
Him: “Take my license plate number if you’ve got a problem”
So I did, sent a photo to the cops sitting at the gate. Wonder of wonders, he was LIVID (lol) :p
Turned out to be one of the so-called “detectives” we work with in the ED. To keep a long story short, we sat down and solved this issue in a civilised manner face to face, ironed out the kinks and realised we will face each other further in the longterm.
But such an issue could easily be avoided by
1. Using your swipe card
2. Not breaking the barrier every time you enter the private parking
3. Dont assume your position makes you better than anyone else, especially when one addresses you. No one is inferior to you.
